Eco-friendly packaging – case study

THE CLIENT

KNP | Spillers logo

Established in 1958, Spillers have been the market leader in equine nutrition and horse feed products for over 60 years, thanks to continual research, innovation and development of products that benefit the lives of horses and ponies. Innovation which included sourcing new, eco-friendly packaging.

THE CHALLENGE

Spillers came to us as they were looking to replace their existing plastic horse feed scoops with a more environmentally friendly packaging alternative that was:

  • easy to use
  • easy to transport
  • readily recyclable

As part of the solution, it was important to Spillers that the product could be flat packed, then easily pop up for the end user to use.

THE SOLUTION: THOROUGHBREAD ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING

Stage one of the process was stock sampling. All of the stocks we recommended to Spillers were suitable for flat packing, flexible enough to ‘pop up’, and robust. And of course, eco-friendly.

Following the selection of the paper stock, the next step was to produce a prototype. To do this we commissioned a bespoke cutter guide to set up the artwork and make the die cutting tool for a ‘pillow box’ design. With this in place, a plain paper prototype was sampled using the chosen stock. The prototype was then tested and refined until version 3 was approved and sent into production.

Production involved us litho printing the eco-friendly food scoop with Spillers company branding, die cutting, assembling and flat packing.

THE RESULT

Eco-friendly packaging Spillers were over the moon with. Working in partnership throughout the process from initial conversation to product delivery, together we hit the brief. And in practice out in the real world the solution worked perfectly. 10,000 scoops were ordered for the first run, with 5,000 stored for call off.
